Hypogeum Geopark of the Upper Crotone area

the largest underground karst system in Europe

Our company and our olive trees are part of  the Hypogeum Geopark of the Upper Crotonese, which is the largest underground hypogeum karstic system in Europe, whose peculiarities contribute to the enhancement of Crotone province.

Castelsilano is located in an area where the morphology, flora and fauna make the environment unique, as well as the plants that produce its oil, which have their roots in those lands.

The area is characterized by evaporitic rock formations, deriving from the deposition of salts in an ancient sea, which began to dry up slowly about five million years ago.

Today the water continues the process of erosion of the subsoil, making it rich in underground cavities of great geological and speleological interest.

On the surface, the morphology reflects underground phenomena: the presence of sinkholes, blind valleys and steep hills preserves various species of flora and fauna, which have disappeared elsewhere due to intense human activities.

All this is reflected in the philosophy behind the manufacturing process of our olives.

the lese river

BORN IN the heart of the Sila National Park

Not far from the headquarters of our company, the Lese flows, a river that rises from the heights of Mount Pettinascura (1,689 m. above sea level); It is the heart of the Sila National Park, with a course of about 116 km.

It contributes to maintaining a unique biodiversity thanks to the diversity of areas and ecological niches that its banks host, so that it can be considered an “open-air laboratory” where the evolution of flora and fauna species and their diversity have been preserved and maintained differently than in other territories.

Thanks to the geomorphological conditions of our territory, no significant constructions or settlements have ever been built and today forestry-pastoral activities are carried out with “light”, minimally invasive and non-impacting techniques, preserving the great natural and landscape value of the territory.

In this area, the Mediterranean vegetation best expresses its characteristics, fully respected by human activity, which has shaped these hills since the Magna Graecia era, creating terraces and planting thousands of olive trees.

The short chain of our production embodies the desire to preserve the characteristics of our land, in full respect of the environment, contributing to the dissemination of our landscape and its history.
